For a long time, the general consensus was that 626,000 Americans died between 1861 and 1865, making the Civil War by far the most deadly conflict of all American history. Recently, however, new statistical analysis and extrapolation of data suggest that the number may be closer to 750,000. Even if we take the former figure of 626,000 and divide it into the total population of roughly thirty-two million, we come up with 1.9 percent of the total population killed. No other war or conflict in American history compares in terms of mortality and destruction, to put it simply.
