How usual or unusual were the Whitmans?

They displayed one of the greatest ranges and assemblages of talent that one could find, but they also had more than their share of tragedy and sorrow. Perhaps they were truly just a family that came from the moon, figuratively speaking; more likely, they were a highly talented group who represented much of the best of what mid-nineteenth century America had to offer.
