We aren’t certain. With Grant, this always seems to be a possibility, and he was a superb equestrian, who did not suffer many falls. To the best of our knowledge, however, Grant had fallen from his horse under normal circumstances, and the wound would take some time to heal. Lacking that time, he set out, first by steamboat, then by horse.
