What do we know of conditions in Vicksburg just before the end of the siege?

When the Union men entered the ruined city, they quickly compiled stories of how horrific the siege had been, but the better, firsthand accounts come from Vicksburg’s several newspapers. The city had six newspapers when the siege began, and several were still operating when it ended. To continue to print required all sorts of sacrifices and odd compromises, however.
