What was the role of J. E. B. Stuart?

As ever, Stuart’s role was to shadow the Confederate march and to keep the North in the dark, so far as Lee’s movements were concerned. Lee had the utmost confidence in Stuart, a feeling shared by many, if not most, of the commanders. But a series of events, accidents almost, conspired to make Stuart less than his best on this occasion.
