When did “John Brown’s Body” first appear?

People began singing songs about John Brown almost immediately after his death. There was something quite wonderful about this man’s story, especially the way he courageously set out to accomplish what state and federal governments did not even attempt. To the best of our knowledge, the first time that the song or songs appeared in print was in the summer of 1861, when the New York Tribune published these words:
