Lincoln’s Election, Southern Secession: 1860 to April 1861

1860

Where did Lincoln go after his New England tour?

Straight home to Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln had already decided he would be more effective at home than on the road. Lincoln was a good orator, but he gave so much time and energy to his speeches that they had the potential to drain him. By contrast, he could spend time in Springfield, Illinois, monitoring events by use of the telegraph. As it turned out, this was a much more effective use of his time.
