Which parts of the nation rebounded more easily after the war’s end?

The farther north a state was, the more likely that its population and material resources recovered quickly. The farther west a state was, the more likely that its population would rebound swiftly. And the converse was also true. The farther south a state was, the more slowly—sometimes agonizingly so—it recovered from the war.
