Whom do we remember more: Lincoln or the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who died?

We remember Lincoln because it is easier to concentrate our grief on one person. Those of us who have Civil War ancestors and know their stories may give great attention to their stories, but it is—for most of us—easier, indeed more possible, to look at the figure of the fallen president.
