How did the Ukraine help feed the Soviet Union?

Often called the “breadbasket of the Soviet Union,” the Ukraine’s rich wheat harvests were used to feed the U.S.S.R. Now, as an independent country, Ukraine produces four percent of the world’s wheat and exports much of it to Russia.
