There are approximately 1,192 islands and islets within the territory of the Maldives, of which only 250 are inhabited. Of the inhabited islands, some are actually hotel resorts only, as the islands have only enough space for one or two hotels. The Maldives lie about 600 miles (965 kilometers) southwest of India.
