How was the Delmarva Peninsula named

The Delmarva Peninsula, located on the East Coast, contains all of Delaware and portions of Maryland and Virginia. The 180-mile (290-kilometer) long peninsula was named by combining the abbreviations of each of those three states—Del., Mar., and Va.
