In which direction do ships sail through the Panama Canal

Though you would expect them to travel east from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean when sailing through the Panama Canal, ships actually travel northwest. Since the Isthmus of Panama lies parallel to the equator, the canal does not lie east-west but rather northwest-southeast.
