The word “reich” literally means “empire” in German. The First Reich is considered to be the Holy Roman Empire from 800 to 1806 C.E. The Second Reich was Germany, united under Otto von Bismarck, from 1871 to 1918. In 1933, Adolf Hitler established the Third Reich, the Nazi regime, which lasted until the defeat of Germany at the end of World War II, in 1945.
