What is a bullet train

Bullet trains, or shinkansen, as they are called in Japan, are similar to traditional passenger trains but have been enhanced to travel at speeds of up to 215 miles per hour (346 kilometers per hour). They have been used in Japan since 1965. In 2003 Japan set a world record, testing another generation of bullet trains capable of exceeding 361 miles per hour (581 kilometers per hour).
