Why is Rhode Island called an island even though it’s not

Rhode Island’s official name is “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations,” and includes not only the area of the mainland (the location of the city of Providence), but also four major islands. The largest of these islands is named Rhode Island, from which the state gets the first part of its name.
