It is an important document surviving from the reign of England’s William I (c. 1028–1087), a Norman who had conquered England in 1066 to become king. He ordered the survey so that he could have a complete record of England’s lands, property owners, and resources. He used this information to his advantage, even taking possession of some properties thereafter. The census is considered an excellent record of Europe’s Middle Ages (500–1350).
