What are the basic beliefs of Buddhism?

Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths: existence is suffering; the cause of suffering is desire; through total transcendence (called nirvana) one may suspend suffering; and to end suffering one must follow a certain path—called the Eightfold Noble Path. The path prescribes moral conduct, specifically: 1) knowing the truth; 2) resolving to resist evil; 3) using speech properly—so as not to hurt others; 4) demonstrating respect for life, morality, and property through ones actions; 5) working in a job that does not harm others; 6) making an effort to free one’s mind of evil; 7) mindfulness (or controlling one’s thoughts and feelings); and 8) concentration. In some places, the beliefs and practices of Buddhism are combined with those of Hinduism and the Shinto religion.
