What does “messiah” mean? |
Messiah is the Hebrew word for “anointed one.” In the broadest sense, a messiah is the professed or accepted leader of some hope or cause. Jesus is believed by christians to be the Messiah whose arrival was foretold by the Hebrew prophets in the Old Testament. For example, in Isaiah 9:6, it states that a child will be born among the people, “a son is given to us; he will bear the symbol of dominion … and his title will be Wonderful Counselor, Mighty Hero, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”
