The Byzantine Empire (330 or 395–1453) is considered a link between ancient and modern civilizations. Though the empire was constantly fighting off invaders, plagued by religious controversies, and marred by political strife, as the heir of the Roman world it allowed for the customs of Greco-Roman civilization to mix with those of the East and with Christianity. The fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453 typically marks the beginning of the modern era.
