What was the Enola Gay?

It was the American B-29 bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare. On August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay flew over Hiroshima, Japan, to drop an A-bomb over the city. The explosion killed an estimated 80,000 people and leveled an area of about five square miles in Hiroshima, an important manufacturing and military center. Thousands more died later from radiation exposure.
