What was the arms race?

The arms race refers to the buildup of nuclear weapons by the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War. The “race” began on August 29, 1949, when the Soviet Union tested an atomic bomb. (Prior to this, only the United States had the knowledge to build the atomic bomb.)
