When did the United Nations begin its work?

The United Nations (UN) began fulfilling its mission very soon after it was chartered: The first meeting was held January 10, 1946, when the inaugural session of the General Assembly opened in London. On February 14, the UN voted to make its headquarters in the United States. Its complex was built in Manhattan, overlooking New York’s East River, in 1950.
