The famed national church of England was begun between 1042 and 1065 when Edward the Confessor (c. 1003–1066) built a church on the site of the Abbey. King Henry III (1207–1272) began work on the main part of Westminster in 1245. Since the time of William the Conqueror (1066), all of England’s rulers, except Edward V and Edward VIII, have been crowned at the church. The Abbey is also a burial place of great English statesmen and literary giants (the latter are buried in the Poet’s Corner).
