Who was Hoyle?

Edmond Hoyle (1671 or 1672–1769) was an English cardplayer who, in 1742 at the age of 70, published Short Treatise on Whist, which provided the rules for a game that developed into auction bridge and later into contract bridge. Hoyle’s name has survived among bridge players in the phrase “according to Hoyle.”
