The Basics

How can I find out if I am dealing with a legitimate insurance company?

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (www.naic.org) keeps track of all complaints lodged against insurance companies in each state. You may investigate an insurance company by going to its website to see if it exists, if it has any complaints against it, and if it is a legitimate company with which to do business. You should never pay any company or website to view its reports, as this information is available for free on many websites.
