How do financial planners receive compensation?

Financial planners are compensated in many ways. Some charge an hourly fee. Others charge a monthly fee, no matter how much advice they give. Some charge a flat fee to draw up an annual financial plan. Others may charge a percentage of what you actually invest based upon the size of your portfolio. Still others earn a commission or percentage of whatever financial product they sell to you. So you should carefully consider how much you must pay in fees before choosing a financial planner.
