How many index funds exist?

According to experts at Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, in 2003 there were approximately 419 index funds in which to invest. Today there are more than 1,732 index fund choices for an individual investor, with assets increasing by 70% over the past five years to over $2 trillion. Money invested in bond index funds has increased to approximately $510 billion. In contrast, money invested in actively managed stock portfolios declined by 18% during the same period.
