How sizable an effect does commercial real estate development have on the U.S. economy?

The commercial real estate industry contributes approximately 2.3 million jobs in the United States, and contributes approximately $303.4 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product (a 16% increase from 2011). Since 2011, real estate development investment in construction and other real estate development spending has been growing at 10% per year, according to researchers at the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP).
