In the most simplistic terms, what is the proper allocation for my retirement portfolio?

The most simplistic way to consider the proper mix of assets for your retirement portfolio is to understand that when you allocate more of your portfolio to equities, this asset class may provide more opportunity to grow the value of your portfolio while also exposing it to more risk. A portfolio more heavily weighted toward income-producing investments such as bonds will provide some annual income—hopefully better than inflation, at less risk—but the portfolio will not increase very much in value over time.
