What are “government bonds”?

A government bond is an interest-generating security, issued by a government, that promises to pay an investor a specified sum of money on a specific date. Government bonds fall into three categories: treasury bills, which mature in less than one year; treasury notes, which mature in one to ten years; and treasury bonds, which mature in more than ten years.
