What happens when a bond issuer defaults on the bond?

When a bond issuer defaults on a bond, it fails in some way to meet certain obligations, such as the regular payment of interest and principal due to the bondholders. Sometimes bond issuers may be in default if they fail to report or file information properly, or if they enter into bankruptcy.
