What is a “derivative”?

A derivative is a sellable or marketable financial product or investment vehicle that derives its price from an underlying product or investment vehicle. Copper or oil futures contracts derive their price from, among many other factors, the underlying market price, supply and demand, and future perceptions of supply and demand.
