What is a “life stage” or “life cycle” investment?

Typically, life stage or life cycle investments are investments in mutual funds or other investment vehicles in which as you age, your portfolio gradually shifts from predominantly equities of varying types and risk factors to predominantly bonds of varying types and risk factors. The fixed income attributes of investments such as bonds carry relatively less risk.
