401(K)s

What is a “matching program”?

A matching program provides an opportunity for millions of Americans to obtain free money from their employers, deposited directly into their 401(k)s. An employer will match a percentage of what you put into your 401(k), as long as you set aside a certain minimum amount each year, with a limit on the amount per year. For example, if a company matches 5% of your contribution, this means that for every $100 you contribute to your retirement account, your employer contributes $5.
