What is an interesting strategy when it comes to investing in actively managed funds and passively managed index funds?

Some experts believe it may be wise to use active managers for some special sectors while still using more passively managed index funds for other sectors. In one example cited by Kiplinger’s, one might use a passively managed index fund for large company investing, but use an actively managed fund for small company investing.
