What is “property tax”?

Property tax is a general term meaning the taxes levied on the value of your principal residence. The proceeds go to finance local services, education, and operational costs for the city and county in which you live, the financing of special projects such as sewers, streets, and parks, and—depending on the state you live in—state services as well.
