Why are small businesses so important to the U.S. economy?

Despite media impressions that large companies seem to wield a great deal of influence on the U.S. economy, according to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, 99.7% of all companies in the United States are small companies that employ over 50% of the available private labor force, or approximately 120 million people.
