Classical Greek Mythology

The Meaning of the Greek Hero Myths

Did the stories of the heroes enter specifically into the lives of the Greeks in any way?

If the gods were most evident to the Classical Greeks in the great temples such as those on the Acropolis of Athens, the heroes of Greek mythology would have been important in schools as ethical and cultural models, and especially in the famous tragic plays by such writers as Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides and in the comedies of Aristophanes. These plays were the central events, for example, in the great religious festival known as the City Dionysia.
