Philosophy and Psychology of Myths

How can myths be compared with dreams?

Both myths and dreams are narratives that often transcend the “real world” restrictions of time, space, and identity. Both myths and dreams contain bizarre situations and also the possibility of metaphorical or symbolic information about the dreamer or the culture. The psychoanalyst sees the dream as a potential revelation of the dreamer’s psyche, unimpeded by the defensive mechanism we all employ in our waking lives. Mythographers such as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell see myths as cultural dreams reflecting the psyches of the given cultures that “dream” them and the archetypal workings of a collective unconscious when myths of many cultures are compared.
