How did Joseph Campbell use myths?

Essentially, though influenced by Freud, Campbell worked from a Jungian perspective. In his most famous work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, he concentrated on the hero archetype, tracing the universal or near-universal pattern of the collective hero’s life journey in what he called the heroic “monomyth.” The monomyth contains such elements as the miraculous conception and birth, the quest, the descent into the Underworld, and the return.
