How did the Upanishads contribute to Hindu mythology? |
Perhaps the primary mythological contribution of the Upanishads to Hindu mythology is Brahman, a concept of the Absolute developed by the Vedanta school of the religion. For this school, especially the one known as Advaita Vedanta, Brahman—the gender-neutral form of Brahma in Sanskrit—is the unknowable essence of all reality. Brahman is the universe. The gods are metaphors for Brahman. By discovering the true Self (Atman) within, we discover that we are Brahman.
