King Arthur

How was the Arthurian legend associated with the coming of Christianity?

The Arthurian legend was inevitably associated with the coming of Christianity to Great Britain because of the story of Joseph of Arimathea. According to tradition, Joseph brought to Britain not only the Holy Grail but some of the thorns used to make a mock crown for Jesus before the crucifixion. It is believed by many that the thorn tree still growing in the abbey grounds at Glastonbury, where a grave stone marks what is said to be King Arthur’s grave, are from the thorns brought by Joseph.
