Modern Myths

Introduction

Is there such a thing as a modern myth?

If by “myth” we mean a narrative which is itself not true and usually impossible, but which is important because it “explains” some otherwise unexplainable aspect of reality, there are narratives which may be called modern myths. It is important to note that in this sense modern myths differ from general literature in that literature usually deals with things that did not actually happen but which are generally believable or possible in themselves. According to the above definition of myth, there are modern creation myths and hero myths. There are also new deity myths, although people have generally tended to maintain at least formal adherence to traditional deities even as they have questioned the validity of the traditional hero narratives and, especially, the ancient creation myths.
