The World Myth

Introduction

Is there such a thing as a world myth?

A world myth does not exist if, by “world myth,” we mean a myth that the world or most of the world accepts, even though there have been attempts in history by particular religions to convince the world to believe in their sacred narratives, their myths. A single world myth does not exist because myths need cultural clothes to become alive—to be real-ized. When myths from around the world are compared, however, a universal shadow myth—an archetypal world myth—does emerge.
