What are the Puranas?

The Puranas are religious texts based on bhakti, devotion to a particular deity, particularly the post-Vedic Hindu trimurti (trinity or triad) of Brahma (not to be confused with Brahman), Vishnu, and Shiva—Creator, Sustainer, Destroyer—in which Devi, the goddess in her many forms, has, in effect, displaced Brahma in importance.
