Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) carries the universalist approach—especially Carl Jung’s ideas—forward in a complex analysis of what he sees as a universal hero myth, or “monomyth,” with deep psychological implications. The hero’s life, he suggests, mirrors or represents our quest for psychological wholeness. More than any other mythologist, Campbell has made mythology a popular subject accessible to general readers, even as he considers the highly complex history of and implications of mythology in influential and important works such as his The Hero with a Thousand Faces and his four-volume The Masks of God.
