First of all, mythology is the study of myths. Another term for this meaning of mythology is “mythography,” a term most recently made relevant by the mythographer William G. Doty in his pivotal work, Mythography: the Study of Myths and Rituals. Mythographers (or mythologists) study such matters as the nature of myths, the concept of the myth, and the relation of myths to human nature, society, and history. The word “mythology” is also used in connection with collections of myths. Thus, we can speak, for instance, of Greek Mythology, Norse Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, Solar Mythology, World Mythology, or Mythologies of the World.
