Norse Mythology

Snorri and the Eddas

What is the relationship of Norse culture and mythology to Germanic myth and culture?

Norse mythology is an aspect of Germanic mythology; essentially Norse is the term applied to northern Germanic mythology. It is not surprising that there are significant parallels between Norse mythology and that of the other Germanic peoples—the Anglo Saxons of Britain, for example, and the Germans themselves. Thus, the equivalent of the Norse god Odin is the German high god Wotan and the Anglo-Saxon Woden, and the Norse Thor had German and Anglo-Saxon cognates in Thunr and Thunor, respectively. Sagas such as the Norse Volsunga Saga and the Nibelungenlied epic in Germany have much in common, both telling the story of the hero Sigurd (Siegfried in Germany) and his family.
