Birth is always miraculous. It is a miracle that speaks to the universal longing for a new beginning. We long for the hero who can represent not only the given culture, but all of us. The hero is conceived outside the “normal” process because the hero belongs not to any one family but to the whole culture. Like all the first humans in myth, the hero is conceived and born mysteriously because, as did Adam in the Bible or the Navajo First Man and First Woman, he or she springs from the eternal essence. The world hero represents our second chance. It is significant that even if the hero is fathered by a god, he can only be meaningful to us as a fellow human if he enters the world via the biological doorway, which is the human mother.
